Uae eid sales surge for apparel group

5月 4th, 2012 by zeeverfbl

Apparel Group’s sales during this year’s Eid al Adha holiday were its biggest ever as consumers opened up their wallets and purses after months of restraint.

Nilesh Ved, the chairman of the retail group that has 520 stores worldwide, including in the UAE and India, and is a franchisee for the mid-market fashion brands Aldo and Aeropostale, said Eid sales in the Emirates were up 20 per cent from the year earlier, a bigger shopping surge than seen in past holidays.

“We were surprised that Eid was so big,” Mr Ved said. “People were waiting to spend money and they got in the festive mood.” credit card purchase protection

Retail sales in the Emirates have been dampened this year by the economic downturn, as job cuts in the region have deterred shoppers. Retailers, particularly those selling luxury wares or gold jewellery, have seen sales fall by as much as 40 per cent. plastic t shirt bags

But after Ramadan, consumer confidence in the UAE rose by a record 13 points, the research company Nielsen reported. General Industrial Equipment

In the past few months, consumers have not seen the widespread layoffs that occurred in the first half of the year, which has eased their reluctance to shop, said Laurent-Patrick Gally, a retail analyst with Shuaa Capital in Dubai.

“After nine months of belt tightening, people are seeing that things are slowly getting better,” he said. “This has put back some sort of confidence that the worst is behind them. For those still here, the situation may be going back to some kind of norm, and they’re resuming spending slowly.”

Mr Gally said Dubai World’s request for a debt restructuring last month had a minimal effect on local consumers. “From a consumer perspective, the only thing they care about is their own job situation.”

However, shoppers continue to shy away from luxury purchases. Mohi-Din bin Hendi, the president of BinHendi Enterprises, which holds the local licences for Hugo Boss and Gianfranco Ferre, said although Eid sales were brisk – between 10 and 15 per cent lower than last year.

“Last year was unbeatable in terms of figures,” he said. “But this [Eid] was very good, taking into consideration the upheavals in the finance sector.”

Mr Ved, whose Apparel Group has 240 stores in the UAE, said this year overall has been tough. The group’s like-for-like sales are down between 4 and 5 per cent and year-to-date profits are down between 10 and 12 per cent.

However, gross sales have grown 18 per cent so far this year compared with last year, and like-for-like sales in all its markets outside of Dubai continue to grow, said Mr Ved. Same-store sales are up by 30 per cent in Abu Dhabi, 25 per cent in Qatar, 18 per cent in Kuwait, and 35 per cent in India.

“We have to realise that Dubai opened four new malls in one year, and naturally the business was divided,” he said. “The traffic is there in the malls, but people are looking for deals and offers and looking for value brands. If you are a value retailer, you are OK. If you are selling anything in high-end or luxury, that’s where the tough time is.”

Apple changes stance on led flashlight apps

5月 4th, 2012 by zeeverfbl

It’s been hot here in the northeast with temperatures expected to be in the triple digits for the next three days. We’ve been running the air conditioning a lot and last night the power went out — undoubtedly because everyone else in the area is doing exactly the same thing. under counter fridge freezer

This turned out to be the perfect chance to test the new Light-O-Matic app ($0.99, App Store) exclusively for iPhone 4. Previous iPhone “flashlight” apps were pretty pathetic, simply turning the screen white, with some silly other features grafted on. I mean come on, you can do the same thing by opening the Mail app. Light-O-Matic is actually quite useful because it uses the LED flash on the rear of the iPhone 4 as the flashlight — not the screen. And last night I was able to find my way to the bedroom because of it. samsung bottom freezer refrigerator

The app has several other features too (strobe, safety mode, morse code), but let’s face it, you want it for the flashlight. There’s an interesting backstory. Apple originally denied flashlight apps that used the LED on the new i4 for”inappropriate use of hardware” Apple blocked all the LED flash light apps because they did not expect developers to by pass the camera feed and just use the lights. Battery drain was also another major concern. Yogurt Makers

So, they met up and discussed it and decided to let them through, but all devs had to add a disclaimer to their iTunes Store description about battery drain. Apple finally relented allowing apps to use it with one proviso: developers must include a disclaimer that continued use of the iPhone’s LED may dramatically decrease battery life.

6 tips to avoid security policy failure

5月 4th, 2012 by zeeverfbl

Security breaches expose millions of consumers to identity theft every year, making this a particularly rampant form of IT-related failure. A new study pinpoints human error as the primary cause and offers recommendations for creating and enforcing usable policies.

It’s common for data breaches to result from incidents involving lost laptops, inadequate system testing, poor physical shipping practices, and sheer carelessness. In many cases, these breaches occur when employees violate established security procedures required by either government regulation or existing organizational policies. A research report sponsored by security solution provider, Clavister, affirms the view that workers cause most security problems by ignoring established policies: 86% of all IT directors polled believed that the most likely cause of an IT security issue came from their own employees. The reasons for this were down to staff ignoring, not being made aware of or not being sufficiently trained on security policies, as well as making mistakes or committing industrial espionage. Clavister recommends the following advice for making sure you write clear security policies, implement them consistently, and then conduct rigorous follow-up monitoring: Design the policy so that it’s easy to read and understand.

Do not make it too complicated and technical. Use examples demonstrating each point. translate english to finnish

Educate the users about the policy. It is absolutely key that they understand why rules are needed and what it means to them both personally and in their job. Enforce consequences. Users who do not comply to the policy must face consequences. learning to speak chinese

Make it easy to do the right thing. Do not just make a web policy which states that something is forbidden; implement a content filtering gateway, for example, which makes it impossible to do the wrong things. Electric Shavers

Dictate a hierarchy of access permissions. Grant users access only to what is necessary for the completion of their work. Monitor & improve. Monitor the policy compliance using both security information and event management systems as well as manual spot checks. Don’t be afraid to update your policy, it’s a living document. If users don’t understand, give more examples.

If it’s difficult to comply, find new support technologies, they are there to help you. My take. The survey offers a great reminder on an important topic, but doesn’t break substantial new ground.

For example, I previously wrote about two 2007 studies examining the relationship between human error and security breaches: Based on these reports, it’s clear the vast majority of data breaches are caused by human error: data custodians inadvertently leaving files exposed to search engines, or else losing storage media (and laptops) containing secure data. It’s tempting to believe that security data breaches result from the hands of evil hackers, secretly using advanced techniques to pry into sensitive and well-guarded computers.

Unfortunately, the reality is that most breaches are caused by plain old carelessness. Although these lessons aren’t new they do remain important. The proliferation of online technology magnifies the impact of security mistakes, where errors can hurt literally millions of innocent victims. That’s sufficient reason to take this issue seriously. Mr martin tear down this wall

In Madrid today Trolltech announced that its Qtopia Phone Edition for Linux-based mobile phones is being ported to the Neo1973 and will be offered to individuals under GPL 2.0. What this means, in Europe, is that Qtopia Greenphone developers have a second reference platform and form factor for mobile Linux applications, one based on a touchscreen, and OpenMoko developers have a complete development platform. What this means in the U.S. is not much. Europeans are free to link their own phones to GSM networks, and switch carriers with them. Americans with their TDMA and CDMA networksare tied to whatevergear monopolists choose to let them buy. million little pieces book

Change carriers and you have to buy a new phone. Trolltech CTO Benoit Schillings told me Europeans should be quite excited by this. hard cover book binding

“The key is to provide a framework that lets the developer write appliations and ignore the specifics of the handset.” Sounds nifty, but Americans won’t get any benefits from mobile open source development until carriers loosen their grip on the market. Given that Verizon has just sued to prevent any open access on new frequenciesit’s clear they won’t do this willingly. When words like “capitalism” and “free market” are tossed about to justify government-directed monopolies that deny consumer choice, as in wireless today, they cease to retain their original meaning, and come to mean their opposites. The rest of the world is moving toward a free, competitive mobile market where equipment and services are separate and where consumers, not carriers, rule. Meanwhile the U.S. remains a backwater under the thumb of an oppressive government regime. Printing & Publishing

The FCC, under chair Kevin Martin, can change this. So Mr.

Martin, tear down this wall. Give consumers back a free market. The power of the electromagnetic spectrum should serve competition and the people, not the oligarchs. I want my OpenMoko..

Calxeda is up in arms over intel

5月 3rd, 2012 by zeeverfbl

After Intel’s recent official dissing of the concept of the ARM processor in the datacenter, Calxeda (formerly Smooth Stone) announced 10 new software partners for the ARM-based datacenter servers. They also reiterated their position that it is the costs of power that will drive datacenter operators to their server designs and that they will be able to accomplish many common datacenter tasks using only 1/10th the power consumed by competitors systems. semi permanent lip liner

Rather than taking the approach that Intel is pursuing with their next generation 64-bit low power Atom processors Calxeda is building a 32-bit, four-core ARM A9 variant, that combined with its in-house developed interconnect, memory controller and 4 GB of memory will draw less than 5 watts for a complete server node. They plan to squeeze 120 of these 4 core nodes into a single 2U rack server, which they claim will deliver performance equivalent to today’s 40U rack of conventional servers while using only 1/10th the power and at half the equipment cost. It looks like the Calxeda design is not a massively parallel computer, or even some form of NUMA device, but should be thought of a squeezing that 40U rack of independent servers down into a single 2U box. Given how many servers are used in this fashion in datacenters offering hosting servers and the potential cloud marketplace, this doesn’t seem like a bad idea. lip balm spf 30

Very importantly, one of the 10 software partners that were announced is Canonical, the company that does the commercial distribution of Ubuntu Linux. This gives potential customers, who are already likely Linux shops, a familiar face when the servers do eventually publicly launch. These early adopters and partners are expected to receive hardware by the end of the year. Slow Cooker

This really is a wait and see situation. If Calxeda is able to deliver on their promise, they could quickly become the server of choice for commercial hosting providers already on Linux, as there will be easily demonstrable energy savings on a simple 1 to 1 replacement basis as existing hardware ages out.

And the cascade effect of requiring that much less power for servers means that the datacenter becomes more efficient to operate and becomes much more expandable without doing anythingto the existing physical infrastructure. This could be an incredibly compelling business case for cloud providers if Calxeda can pull it off..

Un climate conference close to deal on green fund

5月 3rd, 2012 by zeeverfbl

Negotiators are close to agreeing the shape of a Green Climate Fund, which is designed to help poor nations tackle global warming and nudge them towards a new global effort to fight climate change.

Rich countries have pledged up to $100 billion a year by 2020 to aid poor states most directly affected by rising global temperatures to adapt their economies and protect themselves from adverse weather.

But critics say it could remain a hollow shell unless there is also agreement on where the actual funds come from — and how the money is spent. steel toe waterproof boots

“I have a fair amount of confidence this is going to get done in a positive way,” US climate envoy Todd Stern told reporters on Wednesday. Only a few technical operational details remained to be thrashed out, he said. insulated steel toe boot

China has said it wants the fund set up before it will make its domestic climate efforts binding under an international agreement from 2020. Other important developing countries also want the fund’s design agreed in Durban. Security & Protection

“It is our priority to have the fund adopted and functional in South Africa,” Brazilian climate envoy Luiz Alberto Figueiredo told Reuters.

Mexico, which hosted climate talks last year and has offered to host the headquarters of the planned fund, said a deal was “within reach” and could lead to progress in other parts of the climate change negotiations.

“It helps a lot,” said Luis Alfonso de Alba, Mexico’s lead negotiator.

Nevertheless, some sources said the United States was still haggling over where the long-termÂfinance would come from and how to measure the needs of poorer countries.

When asked how much money could be available, US envoy Stern said most donor countries were waiting for the fund to get up and running before making contributions.

Some cash could come from imposing a charge for carbon emissions on international shipping, but it is unclear whether ministers will adopt that proposal made in draft texts.

Previous UN talks have also tried to include a clause on shipping emissions but it never survived to the final draft.

“Even if the fund is established this week, then practical realities will likely limit its impact for a number of years. It will take at least 12 months to set up and the appraisal process means it will probably not be spending until 2015,” said Nick Robins, climate change analyst at HSBC.

Those who have worked on the fund for years say agreeing the design is already a major achievement and that it would be easier to find cash once the institution had been created.

“Since the US was the last major hold out on the GCF, it looks like we’re in good shape to celebrate,” said Andrew Light, a technical expert who has worked on the fund for three years.

“In the last five weeks I’ve been shuttling around between parties trying to create space to resolve the differences between the US and other countries. There are still just a few issues to resolve but I’m confident they’ll get there,” he said.

Broader talks are deadlocked on how to move forward after a vital clause of the Kyoto Protocol mandating carbon cuts expires at the end of next year.

The European Union has said it is open to signing up to an updated Kyoto Protocol but wants assurances the world’s biggest emitters, including China, the United States and India, which account for nearly 50 percent of the world’s carbon emissions, will sign up too.

Us resists israel call for tough line on iran

5月 3rd, 2012 by zeeverfbl

The US has pushed back at an Israeli attempt to convince Barack Obama, president, to make a “credible military threat” against Iran, in a sign of enduring tensions about how to handle Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, told Joe Biden, US vice-president, at a weekend meeting in New Orleans that Washington should use tougher language and set out a clearer timeline in the dispute. In particular, he argued that only a “credible military threat” would convince Tehran to change course. mobile phone with keyboard

“I disagree that only a credible military threat can get Iran to take the actions that it needs to, to end its nuclear weapons programme,” he said on Monday at a ministerial meeting in Australia. “We are prepared to do what is necessary, but at this point, we continue to believe that the political, economic approach that we are taking is, in fact, having an impact in Iran.”

The US maintains “all options are on the table” – an implicit reference to military force – and argues there is still time for diplomacy. Washington hopes negotiations between Iran and the world’s big powers will start in coming weeks.

“We’ve made it clear we would welcome a return to the negotiating table,” said Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, at the same meeting as Mr Gates. But she added that the Iranians had not yet come up with a date for talks.

The Israeli move comes in parallel with a push by US senators such as John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman for Mr Obama to talk more about his readiness to take military action.

But Israelis add that co-operation with the US on Iran has intensified in the wake of Iran’s presidential elections last year, the subsequent discovery of a secret Iranian enrichment plant and the Obama administration’s success in pushing through new sanctions.

“It’s good that United Nations sanctions and other measures are going well, but we can’t just sit back and wait for a miracle: more pressure has to be built up,” said an Israeli official. “One of the ways is the use of language and showing the seriousness of the international community’s intentions.”

Separately, the Israeli government has revealed plans to build 983 new housing units for Jewish settlers in occupied East Jerusalem, in a move likely to deal a fresh blow to US diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving the deadlocked peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

The building plans – which would mean a significant expansion of the Har Homa settlement between Jerusalem and Bethlehem – are still in an early stage of the planning process.
